In March 1942, the KNILM Dakota "Pelikaan" was fleeing Java during World War II when it was attacked by Japanese fighter aircraft and forced to crash-land at Carnot Bay on the remote coast of Western Australia. On board was a sealed package containing diamonds reportedly worth £300,000. Some of the diamonds were recovered from the wreckage, but historical accounts disagree about how much of the original fortune was ever found. The disappearance led to an investigation, a 1943 trial, and decades of speculation about what really happened to the missing diamonds. This historical documentary investigates the Diamond Dakota mystery from beginning to end: the escape from Java, the Japanese fighter attack, the emergency landing at Carnot Bay, the Beagle Bay rescue, the discovery of diamonds in the wreckage, the investigation and trial, and the mystery of the diamonds that were never fully accounted for. More than 80 years later, part of the aircraft's story still survives. In 2024, an original drift meter from the Dakota was returned to Dutch heritage authorities — while the fate of the missing diamonds remains unresolved. Some scenes are AI-illustrated historical reconstructions used where authentic photographs or footage do not exist.
