For five hundred million years Earth has been running one experiment: which weapon wins? The answer keeps changing. In the Cambrian seas it was Anomalocaris, the first hunter with real eyes. In the Ordovician it was Cameroceras, a twenty-foot cone of stone drifting through the dark like a missile. Then the arms race escalated. Dunkleosteus turned its skull into a pair of bone shears. Otodus megalodon abandoned armour for sheer scale and closed its seven-foot jaws with up to forty thousand pounds of force. In the Carboniferous, oxygen reached thirty-five percent and the arthropods grew into it: Arthropleura at eight and a half feet, and Meganeura, a dragonfly the size of an eagle, hunting a sky with nothing else in it. On land came Tyrannosaurus rex, Spinosaurus and the sickle-clawed Utahraptor. Offshore, in the seas nicknamed Hell's Aquarium, Mosasaurus swallowed prey whole while Pliosaurus funkei drove a nine-foot skull through an ichthyosaur and split it in half. After the asteroid, Smilodon populator and the short-faced bear Arctodus simus took the empty throne. But the deadliest animal on this planet never needed size at all. It weighs two and a half milligrams, has no teeth and no claws, and it kills hundreds of thousands of people every year. So what really makes a creature deadly - force, or reach? In 1857 a Danish zoologist announced that a sea monster was a real animal. His physical evidence was a single beak — horn, about the size of a fist, from a stranded specimen. That was enough. He gave it a name, and the kraken stopped being a legend and became a species. Nobody had seen one alive. And nobody would, for another 147 years. This is what took so long, what we found when we finally got there, and the one feature of this animal that only makes sense if you assume something enormous is hunting it. Along the way: why almost every size figure you have read is inflated, and the specific reason — the tentacles are elastic, and a dead squid stretches. The famous 55-foot animal from New Zealand had a mantle of 1.8 metres. This is why researchers measure the mantle and not the total length. The 1861 encounter with the French corvette Alecton, where the crew harpooned one and it came apart under its own weight as they hauled it aboard, leaving them a fragment of mantle and a drawing made from memory. The 2004 breakthrough, which came from changing the question: instead of going down to look for the squid, two Japanese researchers worked out where sperm whales were hunting and put bait there — a camera on a line, one photograph every thirty seconds. It took twenty-three deployments over three years. And the eye. Twenty-seven centimetres across, nearly three times the diameter of any other animal's. Modelling shows it is close to useless for finding prey — and uniquely suited to spotting a sperm whale, which drags a faint cloud of triggered bioluminescence behind it as it dives. เวลา 14.24 น. วันนี้ สมเด็จพระเจ้าลูกเธอ เจ้าฟ้าสิริวัณณวรี นารีรัตนราชกัญญา เสด็จไปยังห้องจัดนิทรรศการ NEX Hall ศูนย์การค้าสยามพารากอน ทรงเปิดนิทรรศการ Young รักษ์ทะเล "SEA THE CHANGE : สร้างโลกทะเลใหม่ด้วยมือเรา" ซึ่งมูลนิธิอนุรักษ์แนวปะการังและสิ่งมีชีวิตใต้ทะเลไทย ในสมเด็จพระเจ้าลูกเธอ เจ้าฟ้าสิริวัณณวรี นารีรัตนราชกัญญา จัดขึ้นเพื่อเผยแพร่พระวิสัยทัศน์และแนวพระดำริด้านการอนุรักษ์ทรัพยากรทางทะเล รวมทั้งนำเสนอภารกิจและผลการดำเนินงานของมูลนิธิฯ ในการฟื้นฟู อนุรักษ์ และเผยแพร่องค์ความรู้เกี่ยวกับทรัพยากรทางทะเล ตลอดจนส่งเสริมให้นักเรียน นักศึกษา และประชาชน ตระหนักถึงคุณค่าของแนวปะการัง สัตว์ทะเลหายาก และระบบนิเวศชายฝั่ง ซึ่งเป็นทรัพยากรที่ล้ำค่าของประเทศ ผ่านรูปแบบการสื่อสารที่ทันสมัย เข้าใจง่าย และก่อให้เกิดประสบการณ์การเรียนรู้อย่างสร้างสรรค์ โอกาสนี้ พระราชทานโล่แก่ผู้สนับสนุนการดำเนินงานของมูลนิธิฯ เพื่อยกย่องเชิดชูเกียรติแก่องค์กร และหน่วยงาน ที่ให้การสนับสนุนและมีส่วนร่วมในการดำเนินงานด้านการอนุรักษ์ ฟื้นฟู และคุ้มครองแนวปะการัง ตลอดจนทรัพยากรและสิ่งมีชีวิตใต้ทะเลไทยอย่างต่อเนื่อง รวม 17 หน่วยงาน จากนั้น ทรงเปิดและทอดพระเนตรนิทรรศการ Young รักษ์ทะเล "SEA THE CHANGE : สร้างโลกทะเลใหม่ด้วยมือเรา" ซึ่งแบ่งออกเป็น 8 โซนหลัก ที่ถ่ายทอดเรื่องราวและสร้างประสบการณ์ที่แตกต่างกัน แต่เชื่อมโยงต่อเนื่องเป็นลำดับเดียวกัน เพื่อนำผู้เข้าชมจาก "การมองเห็น" ไปสู่ "ความเข้าใจ" และต่อยอดสู่ "การลงมือเปลี่ยนแปลง" เพื่อร่วมกันดูแลและอนุรักษ์ท้องทะเลไทยให้คงความอุดมสมบูรณ์อย่างยั่งยืนต่อไป ประกอบด้วย Main Entrance Zone เป็นพื้นที่ให้ข้อมูลเบื้องต้น และแนะนำเส้นทางการเข้าชม กิจกรรมภายในงาน และระบบสะสมการเข้าร่วมกิจกรรม, Welcome Zone จัดขึ้นภายใต้แนวคิด "ทะเลคือโลกที่น่าอัศจรรย์" จัดแสดงภาพลักษณ์และบรรยากาศที่สะท้อนถึงความสวยงาม ความอุดมสมบูรณ์ และคุณค่าของทรัพยากรทางทะเล Underworld Zone จัดแสดงความงดงาม ความลึกลับ และความยิ่งใหญ่ของโลกใต้ทะเล ผ่านการจัดแสดง Giant Jellyfish หรือ ประติมากรรมแมงกะพรุนขนาดใหญ่ที่เปล่งแสงโทนสีน้ำเงินและสีม่วง ร่วมกับแสง สี เสียง และสื่อสร้างสรรค์ เพื่อให้ผู้เข้าชมรู้สึกเสมือนได้เดินทางเข้าสู่โลกใต้ทะเล, Surrounded Screen Zone จัดแสดงภาพและเรื่องราวที่สะท้อนความขัดแย้ง ระหว่างความงดงามของธรรมชาติกับภัยคุกคามที่ท้องทะเลกำลังเผชิญ เพื่อกระตุ้นให้เกิดความตระหนักและแรงผลักดันจากภายใน, Zone สายใยแห่งทะเล จัดแสดงพระราชกรณียกิจด้านการอนุรักษ์ธรรมชาติทางทะเลของสมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสิริกิติ์ พระบรมราชินีนาถ พระบรมราชชนนีพันปีหลวง ที่ถูกถักทอสายใยแห่งการอนุรักษ์และสืบสานพระราชปณิธานมายังสมเด็จพระเจ้าลูกเธอ เจ้าฟ้าสิริวัณณวรี นารีรัตนราชกัญญา เพื่อแสดงความต่อเนื่องของพระราชกรณียกิจและแนวพระดำริด้านการดูแลทรัพยากรทางทะเลของประเทศไทย Exhibition Zone จัดแสดงองค์ความรู้ ผลการดำเนินงาน และภารกิจด้านการอนุรักษ์แนวปะการังและสิ่งมีชีวิตใต้ทะเล ของหน่วยงานต่าง ๆ ที่สนองโครงการอนุรักษ์แนวปะการังและสิ่งมีชีวิตใต้ทะเลในพระดำริฯ, Partner Booth Zone จัดแสดงนิทรรศการของผู้สนับสนุนมูลนิธิฯ หน่วยงานภาคเอกชน องค์กรเครือข่าย รวมทั้งนำเสนอนวัตกรรม เทคโนโลยี และแนวทางการดำเนินงานที่ช่วยสนับสนุนการอนุรักษ์ ฟื้นฟู และบริหารจัดการทรัพยากรทางทะเลอย่างยั่งยืน และ Community Market Zone จัดแสดงและจำหน่ายผลิตภัณฑ์จากชุมชน กลุ่มวิสาหกิจเพื่อสังคม และเครือข่ายที่ดำเนินงานโดยคำนึงถึงสิ่งแวดล้อม นอกจากนี้ ยังมีกิจกรรมเสวนา บรรยาย การแสดง และกิจกรรมเชิงปฏิบัติการ เพื่อให้ผู้เข้าชมได้แลกเปลี่ยนความรู้กับผู้เชี่ยวชาญ นักวิชาการ และผู้ทรงคุณวุฒิ ตลอดจนกิจกรรม Workshop เพื่อเปลี่ยนองค์ความรู้และความตระหนักให้เป็นลงมือปฏิบัติที่สามารถนำไปประยุกต์ใช้ในชีวิตประจำวันได้ ผู้สนใจ สามารถเข้าชมนิทรรศการฯ ได้จนถึงวันที่ 12 สิงหาคมนี้ ไม่เสียค่าใช้จ่าย ข่าวในพระราชสำนักประจำวันที่ 29 กรกฎาคม 2569 ติดตามข่าวสารและกิจกรรมเทิดทูนสถาบันได้ที่ : พระลาน Website : http://www.phralan.in.th/ Facebook : / phralanofficial YouTube : / phralanchannel
