The film stars Sachin Pilgaonkar as Amal, Rajni Sharma as Rajni, Asrani as Sharat, A. K. Hangal as Masterji, Om Shivpuri as Amal's father, Paintal as Shambhu. The film is based on the Bengali novel of the same name by Bimal Kar. It's set against the backdrop of the Indian freedom struggle and tells the story of a young girl, Rajni, who is married at a very young age to a school-going boy, Amal. The story revolves around the innocent love and friendship that develops between Amal and Rajni after their marriage. Initially, Rajni is sent back to her parents' home, and Amal continues his studies with the help of his elderly teacher, Masterji. Their relationship grows stronger with each visit, but their lives take a dramatic turn when Masterji is arrested on charges of being a freedom fighter. The film's music was composed by R. D. Burman, with lyrics by Anand Bakshi. One of the popular songs from the movie is "Bade Achhe Lagte Hain" sung by Amit Kumar.
