But hidden across those open plains are abandoned settlements and shrinking towns that reveal another side of the state. In this documentary, we explore forgotten North Dakota communities shaped by railroad decline, agricultural modernization, drought, population loss, and the departure of younger generations. The journey begins in Arena, one of North Dakota’s most striking ghost towns, where an abandoned school and Lutheran church still stand among open prairie after drought and crop failures destroyed the local economy. Tagus tells the story of a railroad settlement that lost its economic purpose when trains stopped making it an important stop. Today, its population has fallen to zero. In Omemee, changing railroad routes dealt another devastating blow. Once filled with banks, businesses, and brick buildings, the settlement gradually collapsed as transportation shifted elsewhere. Lincoln Valley experienced an even stranger fate. Instead of simply abandoning the town, residents physically moved homes and businesses to a neighboring community after failing to attract railroad service. Balfour and Wheelock reveal the quieter form of rural decline. As farming became increasingly mechanized and younger residents moved toward larger cities, local businesses, schools, and public facilities disappeared one by one. The final section turns toward towns that are still alive but face serious demographic pressure. Portland struggles with an aging population and youth outmigration. Hillsboro faces downtown business closures despite its location along Interstate 29. And Mayville, despite being home to Mayville State University, continues dealing with brain drain as graduates leave for larger job markets. These communities show how technological progress, transportation changes, and modern agriculture can reshape entire regions. Some North Dakota towns have already gone silent.
