The first video of a living giant squid in US waters was recorded, found, and nearly destroyed by a lightning strike in one day. In June 2019, a camera called the Medusa — no thrusters, dim red light, and an electronic lure imitating a distressed jellyfish — recorded Architeuthis dux 759 metres down in the Gulf of Mexico. Nathan Robinson found it in the third video file. Thirty minutes later lightning struck the ship, and the footage had not been backed up. Discovery is not the moment the animal enters the frame.
